He is best known outside Germany for his early <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lyric_poetry\">lyric poetry<\/a>, which was set to music in the form of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lied\">Lieder<\/a><\/em> (art songs) by composers such as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Felix_Mendelssohn\">Felix Mendelssohn<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Schumann\">Robert Schumann<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Franz_Schubert\">Franz Schubert<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heine&#8217;s later verse and prose are distinguished by their satirical wit and irony. He is considered a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Young_Germany\">Young Germany<\/a> movement. His radical political views led to many of his works being <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Censorship_in_Germany\">banned by German authorities<\/a>\u2014which, however, only added to his fame.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heinrich_Heine#cite_note-2\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> He spent the last 25 years of his life as an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Expatriate\">expatriate<\/a> in Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an exile in Paris, Heine became a celebrity avatar reflective of the liberal and cosmopolitan values of the mainstream press.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heinrich_Heine#cite_note-:2-3\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heinrich_Heine#cite_note-Kruse_2016-4\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> In the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nazi_Germany\">Third Reich<\/a>, Heine&#8217;s name was invoked as an archetype of an influential Jewish opinion columnist.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heinrich_Heine#cite_note-:8-5\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> Heine is remembered for his phrase &#8220;Where they burn books, they will ultimately burn people also&#8221;, which ultimately came true in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Holocaust\">Holocaust<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heinrich_Heine#cite_note-6\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heinrich_Heine#cite_note-7\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heinrich_Heine#cite_note-8\">[7]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":1529,"template":"","class_list":["post-1530","poet","type-poet","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Heinrich Heine - The German Poetry Blog<\/title>\n<meta name=\"robots\" content=\"index, follow, max-snippet:-1, max-image-preview:large, max-video-preview:-1\" \/>\n<link rel=\"canonical\" href=\"https:\/\/germanpoetry.com\/de\/poet\/heinrich-heine\/\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:locale\" content=\"de_DE\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:type\" content=\"article\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:title\" content=\"Heinrich Heine - The German Poetry Blog\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:description\" content=\"Christian Johann Heinrich Heine[a] (born Harry Heine; 13 December 1797 \u2013 17 February 1856) was a German poet, writer and literary critic.
